If you picked up honey in the fall of 2023 or this last fall, you might have noticed parts of our former horse pasture looked pretty dead. That is because we have been working on replacing the pasture grass with native grasses and wildflowers.
In 2023/2024 we worked on the lower pasture on the far side of the fence from the honey box. We have had mixed results, which is common with this type of rehab. This past year we had more native flowers coming up. We believe that we should have planted a mix that was more shade tolerant for better and quicker results.
This last fall we killed off the various non-native grasses along the hillsides of the lower field. We have seeded those with native seed mixes from Pure Air Natives, a local company here in St. Louis. First year results are usually not impressive looking as the seeds need to establish root structures.
